A Stake in the Prairie: Dallas' Link to the Past
Randy Johnson, Director of Horticulture at Texas Discovery Gardens, discusses how Dallas County was once dominated by the blackland prairie, a vast 12 million acre ecosystem now reduced to less than 5,000 original acres. Learn interesting facts about the soil, climate, flora and fauna of the prairie as well as the pioneer settlers who changed it forever.
ABOUT RANDY JOHNSON Randy Johnson has been Texas Discovery Garden's Director of Horticulture since 2007. Randy's primary responsibility is the maintenance of the 7.5 acre botanical garden located at Fair Park. The garden includes several water features and a greenhouse where native and adapted plants are grown to be used in the botanical gardens, sold at two annual plant sales and also sent to Dallas City Parks, schools and other non-profit gardens. Randy has a degree in Wildlife Management from Texas A&M University as well as many years of experience in estate gardening and studying native plants, insects and animals inhabiting the blackland prairie ecosystem in North Central Texas.
