Event Description

Every family has a story. What's yours?

As you explore the families featured at Dallas Heritage Village, start preserving your own family's story.

Oral History Workshop (Church), 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. How can oral history be used to preserve your family’s stories? How do museums and historians use oral history? How do you become an oral historian? Staff from The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza will share how their museum uses oral history, give tips on ways to become an oral historian, and help the group determine a list of questions so you can start recording your history.

Oral History Live! 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m, Locations TBD Using the questions you came up with during the Oral History Workshop, participants will have a chance to conduct an oral history at two stations sponsored by the Dallas Historical Society. In addition, Curator of Exhibits and Collections Evelyn Montgomery will be interviewing people that played a role in the story of Dallas Heritage Village. You can watch the interview as it happens and will have a chance at the end to ask your own questions. With your permission, all oral history recordings will be jointly held by the Dallas Historical Society and Dallas Heritage Village. (Participating in the Oral History Workshop is recommended but not required.)

Want to meet some other participants before you get here?  Check out the event page on Facebook and start sharing stories today!  (Please note: You must be a fan to post.)

Frequently Asked Questions

Registration
How do I register?

To register, you have several options:
• Mail—simply print out the registration form at www.DallasHeritageVillage.org and mail it in with your payment.
• Online—Pay with a credit card online. But please fax or mail the registration form to us--or just let us know the ages of your children in the comments box.
• Phone—Call Reservations at 214-413-3674 between 8:00 a.m. and Noon, Monday through Friday.
• Fax—Fax the form with credit card information to 214-428-6351

How do I register my group?
If you’re part of a homeschool group or co-op and you plan to arrive together or in no more than 3 smaller groups, please fill out one form. If your group is planning to arrive separately, please fill out a form for each family. This will streamline the check-in process, so you can get started on your day as soon as possible.

When is the deadline for registration?
The deadline for registration is Wednesday, October 6.

Do I have to pre-register?
We strongly encourage pre-registering! It helps us as we plan and ensures that we have enough materials for everyone.  It also saves you money!  On the day of the event, general admission for everyone four years old and up will be $5.

Is there any way to attend this event for free?
We have an Educator Membership designed for teachers and homeschool families.  For just $40/year, you receive free admission to most DHV events (including Lone Star History Day!) as well as other goodies.  Click here for more information or to sign up today.
Please note that to receive free admission to Lone Star History Day, you must be a member prior to registering for the event.  No additional membership discounts can be applied to the Educator Membership.

Is there some kind of schedule for the day?
Almost everything is self-guided and self-paced and will be going on throughout the day. The event will run from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. There will probably be a few things that do not happen for that entire time. But there will be plenty for you to do no matter when you arrive! The Oral History Workshop (optional) will be held twice—at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Oral History Live will be from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., and the recording stations will be available on a first come, first served basis.

What do I do when I arrive at Dallas Heritage Village?
When you arrive at Dallas Heritage Village, check in at Guest Services. You will receive a packet containing your tickets for the museum, maps, a program, and other related information. If you registered with the Group Registration Form, your packet will be under your group’s name. Family Registrations will be under your last name.

The Program
What are some of the topics that will be covered by the theme Family Stories?
On this day, we’ll be paying special attention to the families that once lived in the homes now preserved at Dallas Heritage Village. But we also want you to start thinking about your own family’s history! Whether or not you choose to participate in Oral History Live, the Oral History workshop will provide you with tools to record your family’s story. There will also be opportunities to share your family’s story with other visitors that day.
