Junior Historians
Volunteers ages 11 to 18 share their love of history.

Junior Historians

Do you love history? Always wondered what life was like "back then?" Are you between the ages of 11 and 18? Then join the Junior Historians of Dallas Heritage Village!

Every year, Junior Historians participate in a one week camp that gives them the tools they need to be volunteers at Dallas Heritage Village. Throughout the year, Junior Historians volunteer at a special event, as a building guide, and/or as part of a group volunteer project.

Dallas Heritage Village is a chapter of the Texas State Historical Association Junior Historian Program.

Become a Junior Historian

Information about applications for the 2012 Class will be posted in February.

Following the 2009 "Teens in History" Texas State Historical Association awarding winning Junior Historian project, volunteers were asked about their experience in the program. Carley Callahan, 16 years old and a Junior Historian since 2005, expressed what being a volunteer at Dallas Heritage Village means to her.

"I'm so glad to be able to be involved in this program.... I'm so glad that I've been here to watch this organization grow and blossom over the 8 years that I've been attending as an admiring patron, a volunteer, a senior member of the Junior Historians, and now- one of the brains behind yesterday's event. I really have found that Dallas Heritage Village has really helped shape who I am and expedite my love for history, acting and interpretation, leadership, and volunteer work. I can't tell you how wide my smile is at the fact that we were awarded such a high honor at the lunch yesterday! What an amazing gift!"

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the volunteer requirements during the year?
We ask Junior Historians to try to complete 12 volunteer shifts during the course of the year. We understand schedules can be busy, and some are able to volunteer more time than others. There will also be meetings periodically, especially if we’re working on a special project.

What are these special projects?
These projects vary from year to year. In the past, we’ve planned a special event, "Teens in History." In the near future, we hope to begin an oral history project.

Can I wear a historic costume when I volunteer?
Yes, you can, but it’s certainly not required! At the end of camp, we will provide you with a DHV t-shirt and nametag to wear when you volunteer. However, though we cannot provide historic costumes for Junior Historians, we are more than happy to help you create your own special costume.

How many Junior Historians are there?
We currently have just under 30 active Junior Historians. Most are in the 11 to 14 age range, but we do have high school students too. Our Junior Historians attend a wide variety of schools, from public to private to home school, and come from all over North Texas.
