1840 Dallas? We have an App for that.

A typical visit to the museum usually includes stopping in the Ticket Office and acquiring a Visitor’s Guide. The Guide is full of historic information about our buildings and a map to plot out your visit. You could also choose to listen to docent-led tours of specific structures, interact with historic interpreters in costume, and learn more about historic artifacts on display through signage. You may have also chosen to dial the number provided in the Visitor’s Guide and listen to the recorded stories on the cell phone tour.

Starting this month we attempt to merge a few of these aspects to create an interactive app for visitors. Visitors can currently access a web version of the application at this URL:

http://dallasheritagevillage.toursphere.com

While using the application you will receive “Geo Alerts” as you walk around the Village that call your attention to the structures closest to you. When you tap on the alert or any structure on the map, you can then listen to the audio that was previously part of our cell phone tour. You’ll also have access to historic information about the houses and you will be able to view pictures of our structures in their original locations.

Later this month we should also have a free Native Version of the app available for download for Apple and Android in their respective stores.

Our goal is to expand the experience available via the application over time. We hope to incorporate notifications about the perfect “Instagram worthy” pictures throughout the buildings and grounds. Perhaps we will be able to include “Geo Alerts” to draw the visitors’ attention to certain artifacts in key structures. We also may be able to make the information available in a variety of languages over time.

Our village celebrates the history of the turn of the 19th century and now your visit doesn’t have to leave the 21st century.
