Getting to Know: Sydney Abdo

Stephanie Land, our Rentals Manager, left us just a short time ago.  We were sorry to see her go and she left a hole inour staff.  A hole now being filled by Sydney Abdo, who has joined the tide of new administrative staff members at Dallas Heritage Village.

Sydney has risen up through the ranks of DHV to reach her current position.  She was promoted from being a highly energetic and hard working History Host, who was always willing to step into a roll to get a job done.  Now she steps into the role of Rentals Manager, let’s learn a little more about Sydney…

What first got you interested in working in nonprofits/museums?

Hmm, great question … I started with the Junior Historians here at Dallas Heritage Village in 2010…? I think.  How old do you have to be to be a Junior Historian? 11?  So I presumably was at least 11.  I must have joined as soon as I was able to, because I really like this place.  I’m still obsessed with history, and I am working on my history degree at Tech.

How did you first learn about DHV? Why did you want to join our team?

[Sings] When I was a young warthog! [Stops] Terri Brown, who is one of our current board members and like a second mom to me, needed stuff for her daughter and me to do during the summer.  We did all the history camps out here.  Since I was already really involved I started volunteering as a Junior Historian as soon as I was able.  Then I was at Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts and there was no time for anything but art.  Then in college I was like “Why don’t I get involved again?”

Are there any special projects/programs that you’re especially excited about?

Well, it was the Birthright BBQ Fest.  But since that was back in June, now I’m excited about the Chefs for Farmers event coming up in November, and eating everything, because food is life. Literally, everything. With two exclamation points. Maybe three.

When you’re not working, what are some of your hobbies and interests? Anything else we should know about you?

I figure skate; and I try to do art but art-block is real.  I watch people speed paint on YouTube to try and get past my block.  Speed painting is so beautiful, especially water colors.  I also get on Instagram a lot to tell all my acting friends: “You’re doing amazing!”
